Tongue-Tie Treatment Choices: Laser or Scissors? Our Take as Dentists

Tongue tie is more common than many realise. It’s where that small band of tissue under the tongue restricts its movement. We see this in newborns, older children, even adults. Some folks also deal with a lip tie. A tongue tied baby may struggle to feed, while adults can find speech, eating, or even kissing tricky. Choosing how to treat it can be confusing. One main decision, should it be released using a laser, or cut with scissors?

We talk about this decision nearly every week at SmileConcepts. There’s no “one-size-fits-all” solution, but our patients expect us to offer the safest, gentlest approach with predictable results.

What is a Tongue Tie, and Who Does it Affect?

Tongue tie (ankyloglossia) means the frenum, the thin stretch of tissue underneath the tongue, is too tight or short. Sometimes the upper lip is also affected by a lip tie. This can be subtle or obvious. You may spot it in your newborn’s trouble latching, or in adults who notice speech issues that never improved.

Trouble signs can include:

  • Tongue can’t move freely up, down or side to side.
  • Breastfeeding pain for mums, poor weight gain in babies.
  • Older children with speech difficulties.

Adults with gum problems, social discomfort, or tightness in the mouth.

Treatment, especially for infants, isn’t always urgent, but most benefit from improved movement, so a decision about the release method needs to be made.

“Precision in dentistry isn’t just about perfection, it’s about comfort, confidence, and changing lives one small detail at a time.”

How Is a Tongue Tie Released? Cutting vs. Laser

There are two popular techniques: traditional cutting and laser release. Each method has pros and cons.

Cutting (scissors or scalpel):

  • Quick. Most babies cry for just a minute.
  • No special technology needed.
  • Bleeding is more likely, but easily stopped.
  • Some babies or children may need stitches.

Laser Release:

  • Uses focused light to separate the tied tissue.
  • Minimal bleeding, laser seals blood vessels.
  • Generally less discomfort during and after the procedure.
  • No stitches required.
  • Highly precise, important with older children or adults.

At SmileConcepts, we use advanced laser methods. We favour laser release for most cases, not because it’s trendy, but because the results speak for themselves. Less trauma. Faster healing. Gentler for both children and adults. Some parents even notice their tongue tied baby feeds better within hours.

Here’s a quick table to compare:

Feature Scissors/Scalpel Laser Surgery
Bleeding
Common, brief
Rare, usually none
Healing Time
Slightly longer
Often quicker
Need for Stitches
Possible
Rare
Pain After
Short term discomfort
Less pain, mild
Cost
Often less
Usually a bit higher
Precision
Depends on hand skill
Very high (guided laser)

Making The Right Choice for You or Your Child

Is laser right for everyone? Not always. A simple tongue tie, easy to see and reach, may be released quickly with scissors. Some families choose that option based on tradition, price, or immediate availability.

We believe in discussing all options with you:

  • What are your main concerns, pain, healing, cost?
  • Is the tongue tie deep or easy to access?
  • Have there been failed releases before?
  • Are there scarring risks or special health considerations?

Our dentists use computer-guided 3D imaging, gentle numbing, and an approach that keeps even nervous patients calm. We explain every step. At SmileConcepts, the focus stays on outcomes, feeding, speech, and comfort.
