Post-Op Instructions

Instructions for Teeth Extractions

Do NOT:

1. Do NOT smoke for 48 hours. This will prevent you from getting a dry socket that is a very painful condition.

2. Do NOT spit for the next 8 to 12 hours. Spitting will result in the clot that has formed in the socket to come off and you will end up bleeding continuously.

DO:

1. DO After 24 hours, use a mouth wash or warm salt water twice daily for 2 weeks

2. DO Use pain relief medications such as nurofen or panadol every 6 hours to help with any pain or discomfort.

Issues you may experience and what to do about them

  • Keep the gauze swab (where used) in place with pressure for approximately half an hour after leaving the surgery.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise, and if the pain is intense, rest with your head raised.

  • If bleeding recurs, apply pressure with cotton gauze for approximately half an hour. Where significant bleeding continues, contact your dentist or local hospital.
  • Use pain relief medications such as nurofen or panadol every 6 hours to help with any pain or discomfort.

  • Avoid hot food/liquids, alcohol and smoking. When numbness has gone, choose luke warm liquids and soft foods and chew away from the wound.

  • Sometimes a DRY SOCKET develops that leads to intense pain. Please let us know if that happens so we can prescribe you appropriate antibiotics and pain relief medications
