Instructions for Braces

Congratulations on getting your new braces!

Proper oral hygiene is imperative while you are going through orthodontic treatment with braces.

This will prevent decay and gum disease around your teeth.

We will monitor your hygiene at each visit and discuss any problems we may see.

It is also equally important that regular cleaning and check-ups be maintained.

You should book your 6 monthly hygiene appointments to maintain the health of your teeth.

Feel free to talk to us at any time if we can help you in any way.

General Guidelines For Braces

  1. For your oral hygiene give yourself plenty of time in the morning and at night.  Carry a travel toothbrush with you so you are able to brush your teeth wherever you are.  Make sure you regularly floss your teeth using super floss. Guide the super floss under, around and through your braces and wires.

  2. Minor tooth discomfort is normal for the first few days after you get your braces and sometimes after adjustments.

  3. Initially, you will need to change your diet to softer food.  Pasta, eggs, soup, bananas and yogurt are all healthy choices.  Make sure you are getting all the nutrition from the food groups.

  4. Avoid hard, crunchy and sticky foods. These include, nuts, toffee and caramel. Keep in mind that even healthy food like carrots and apples should not be bitten into with your front teeth.  Instead, cut them into smaller pieces and chew them on your back teeth.

  5. Avoid sugary or coloured food and drinks such as soda, fruit drinks, red wine, coffee or tea. These may cause tooth decay and also loosen the bond of your braces. To prevent delay of your treatment, these foods should be avoided. Remember to brush or rinse your teeth immediately after having any of these foods.

  6. Cheeks and lips may become irritated until they are accustomed to your new braces.  Orthodontic wax will keep the area smooth until your tissue “toughens up” and prevents further irritation.

  7. As teeth move, the wire moves out the back.  You can use orthodontic wax to make it smooth until your next appointment. Feel free to give us a call on 92677777 to book an appointment for us to adjust the wire for you. Do not attempt to trim the wires yourself.

We Care About You.
