Can I Get Porcelain Veneers If I Have Crooked Teeth? A Case Study

If you’re considering straightening your smile with braces or Invisalign, you may be wondering if there’s a faster alternative. There is! With porcelain veneers, it’s possible to straighten out the appearance of crooked teeth without any time in orthodontic appliances. Instead, the veneers are bonded to the front of each tooth to adjust the way they look when you smile.

Veneers are Effective on Mild to Moderate Tooth Misalignment

Depending on the extent of your tooth misalignment, mild to moderately crooked teeth can easily be adjusted for an aesthetically attractive veneers treatment.

High quality clinical photograph of a patient treated at Smile Concepts, showing teeth straightened with a combination of porcelain veneers and careful planning. The image emphasises symmetrical incisal edges, balanced proportions, and a natural white shade that still suits the patient's complexion. It forms part of a real case gallery demonstrating how even severely crooked teeth can be transformed into a harmonious, confident smile. The picture illustrates the practice's artistic approach and attention to detail in cosmetic dentistry.

In one such case, Dr Shah helped transform a patient’s smile where both crowding and enamel discolouration was present. Rather than undergo conventional treatments such as Invisalign and teeth whitening, the patient elected to address the cosmetic concerns more quickly with dental veneers. In this case, porcelain veneers would be used to bond over each of the teeth in the

‘smile zone’ (which typically varies between 6-10 teeth, depending on the individual.)

Porcelain Veneers Planning Process

Clinical veneer planning image showing a smile design process, such as digital mockups, wax ups, or a cosmetic dentist drawing shapes on a photograph of the teeth. This picture demonstrates how Smile Concepts does not guess final results but carefully maps the ideal width, length, and alignment of each veneer before any enamel is prepared. It communicates that patients can preview potential outcomes and provide feedback, ensuring their new smile supports facial features, lip line, and personal aesthetic goals.

During the initial stage of the porcelain veneer treatment, Dr Shaw met one-on-one with the patient to discuss what characteristics they desired to change and any they still hoped to preserve. By incorporating the patient’s opinions and goals, Dr Shaw was able to adjust the prescribed care plan to be one that was both attractive and natural-looking per their preferences.

In this particular instance, the patient wanted to maintain a natural-looking tooth shade but one that established a consistent colour from one tooth to the next. That way splotchy discolourations could be covered up as if they didn’t exist at all. This strategy would allow for a realistic hue while also enhancing the overall colour of their smile.

But what about the crooked teeth, you ask? Treating crooked teeth with porcelain veneers involves minor adjustments to the natural tooth, creating space for the ‘straighter’ veneer to bond on the front-facing surface. In this case, the patient wanted to preserve natural tooth shape and sizing; the primary goal was to have the teeth look straighter. So, Dr Shaw designed each veneer with the original tooth anatomy in mind. The sizing, length, shape, and contours were each replicated within the porcelain veneers as if the tooth had been straightened out.

Getting Veneers: The Treatment

As with most of our other cosmetic veneer cases, these porcelain restorations required two visits about 14 days apart. The first appointment included prepping the teeth and taking impressions, with temporary veneers applied while the permanent ones were being designed. At the follow-up appointment, the temporaries were removed, and the porcelain veneers were permanently bonded into place.

By placing each custom veneer side by side, areas of crowding and crooked teeth were essentially erased from view.
