What is a root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is procedure where there is removal of the dead or dying nerve inside your tooth that is causing pain. There is formation of an abscess inside your teeth just like a pimple on your skin and this needs to be ‘popped’ and drained. NO PAIN of course. Once that is done we need to clean the ‘canal’ that the nerve was in with LASERS and chemicals and then seal it with a special filling called a root canal filling.

Modern treatments for root canal treatment including laser allow us to complete most root canal therapies in a single visit. No waste of your time and multiple injections and multiple visits.

Here's how your tooth is saved through treatment:

How does dental pulp in the root canal affect our teeth?

The dental pulp is a soft tissue located in the roots within the teeth. It provides nerves, nutrients, connective tissue, and blood vessels to the tooth. Before the invention of root canal treatment, the tooth was often removed and discarded, but now root canal therapy allows us the chance to save the tooth from being lost.

What causes root canal pain?

Root canal pain is perceived if you have one of the following:

a. If decay reaches the nerve of your tooth, the bacteria can infect your nerve and therefore cause really severe pain.

b. If a new filling has been placed which is very deep and near the nerve, that can also cause severe tooth ache

Both of these situations can lead to root canal treatment and where but at Smile Concepts will you get the best care and comfort knowing it is painless and done in one visit.

Why do I need root canal therapy?

Inside every single tooth is a pulp that provides nutrients and contains the nerves of the tooth. If this pulp becomes infected, it will die. This could lead to possible loss of the tooth, if the infected pulp is not removed with root canal therapy. Once the pulp is removed the root canal will be cleaned and sealed.

Why does the pulp in the root canal treatment need to be removed?

When the infected pulp is not removed, pain and swelling can result. Certain byproducts of the infection can injure your jaw bones. Without treatment, your tooth may have to be removed.

What happens if I wait too long for root canal therapy?

If you wait too long to get root canal therapy then the bacteria infecting the tooth could spread and cause the bone and even more teeth to become infected. Eventually pain, inflammation, and swelling will occur. Several teeth may have to be removed if root therapy is not done in time.

What happens after a root canal treatment?

Once a root canal treatment is completed we place a crown on the tooth to protect it from

  1. further infection
  2. fracturing and therefore loss of the tooth

It is very important to place the crown on the tooth and should not be taken lightly.

How long will the restored root canal tooth last?

Your restored tooth could last a lifetime, if you continue to care for your teeth and gums. However, regular check-ups are necessary. As long as the roots of a treated tooth are nourished by the tissues around it, your tooth will remain healthy.

What is the root canal cost?

Root canal cost varies form tooth to tooth depending on several factors. This includes

  1. The position of the tooth in the mouth
  2. The number of nerves in the tooth
  3. The curvature of the roots of the teeth
  4. The difficulty of the root canal treatment.

The cost of root canal treatment starts from 650.00

If you have already had a root canal therapy in the past and the tooth has got infected again then it will cost more to redo the root canal. Sometimes it is better to remove the tooth and restore the space with a dental implant.

What is the root canal procedure?

Below are several steps involved in the root canal therapy. Our team carries out the entire root canal procedure or an endodontist is some cases. An endodontist is a professional dentist that specializes in root canal treatment and root therapy. We are not endodontists but dentist that have special interest in endodontics.

  1. We will start the root canal therapy by creating a hole through the crown of the tooth down into the roots where the root canal procedures take place. The infected pulp is removed from the root canals and the area is then thoroughly cleansed to prepare for a special root canal filling.

  2. There are cases where the pulp chamber cannot be cleaned out completely, so a few days of draining may be required. If this occurs during your root therapy, a temporary cap will be placed on top of the tooth until your next visit.

  3. If the previous step was necessary for your root canal treatment, then your temporary cap will be removed. Afterward, a special root canal filling is placed into the canals and then sealed for good. A permanent cap will be placed on the tooth at a later stage to prevent the fracture of the tooth, which will signify the end of your root canal therapy.

A tooth that has been restored by root canal treatment should last a long time if taken care of correctly. If you follow the advice below, you’ll be able to keep an entire set of healthy teeth for the long run.

In order to prevent a root canal infection, it is important to take special preventative care. It is recommended that you brush and floss your teeth twice daily, which is definitely a recommendation that you should follow. It is just as important to receive a dental cleaning at least once every six months by one of our experienced members here at Smile Concepts.
